When trailers and then each episode for the FX series, Taboo, blasted onto the big box I was hooked. With the association of Ridley Scott, Scott Free Productions, and this mysterious brit fellow Tom Hardy, I knew I would be a follower. Sordid, dark, dank, ridley-esque, cinematic and forbidden (the title hints to that), it would include in aces all these elements that drew me and like-minded viewers in.

I wanted to capture this enigmatic figure with the victorian cloak and tall hat, but was having a hard search. I proceeded to create this lush, multicolored background with existing patterns, then saturating the heck outta the colors. When I found a workable image of the dark man, the piece was almost there. I dropped in the last bit, an old, black ship illustration I recently used on another collage piece. Taboo, a dark, but delightfully different piece for me.

Her Space Holiday 375

Her Space Holiday 375, Inspired by the indie electronica band Her Space Holiday

i think it’s unfair
the only time i go away
is the only time you care

you don’t see the point
 preparing for the end
 you’ve made all these plans
 you put all your friends
 in silent films

I went with one of my paper stock backgrounds, and played with these pink, pastel hues. It took on this classical, vintage feel which felt warm and inviting to me. I want to contrast the pink florals with something modern and fresh. The green and black dots seemed to do the trick.

I loved these older ads that were on Flickr. These women modeling hats seem to mesh well with the background patterns and colors. And mesh I did.

Blade Runner 372

Blade Runner 372. Inspired by the sci-fi, futuristic film Blade Runner. Directed by the visionary Ridley Scott.

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I’ve watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those… moments will be lost in time, like tears…
in rain. Time to die.

My all-time, favorite film is Blade Runner, and can watch it on repeat and still be moved on many levels. I loved the opener where you can see the Tyrell Corporation reflecting off the detectives eyeball as he approaches it.

Still not sure know how many people seeing my piece got it, but I decided to juxtapose a human eye with an android’s eye. And show the difference between the two primarily with different, saturated colors. I added the now classic quote with blue bar to separate them even more. And there
you go.

Drake 379

Drake 379. No, not the rapper. But the larger than life, fire-breathin,’ green, scaly, scary dragon in both mythology and media. Something enormous and awe-inspiring in scale and size, fantastical and terrifying at once, the supernatural stuff of dreams and nightmares. Drakes are smaller than dragons, but still fly and breath fire but have no magical abilities. Basically, Drakes are evil.

Finding art like this that is so mystical, wonderful and amazing, that is hundreds of years old, is truly refreshing. Looking at images on the Internet Archive Book Images on Flickr is a visual treat. Using some of this original imagery in my collage work is an honor.
